The region is most famous for the great Kumbhalgarh fort built during 15th century by Maharana Kumbha. This almost invincible fort is the highest and most formidable in the state of Rajasthan. Standing majestically on 1180m high ridge and representing the past glory of the Rajput rulers.

Thirteen mountain peaks of the Aravalli range protect this impregnable fortress. Seven huge and imposing gates stand like sentinels at the approaches and seven ramparts, one being folded within another with crenelated walls strengthened by rounded bastions and immense watchtowers, make this an impregnable mountain fortress. Its serpentine 15 kilometers long wall is thick and broad enough for eight horses to ride abreast. This grand fort also has 360 temples within the walls.
Kumbhalgarh has perimeter walls that extend 36 kilometers. The frontal walls are fifteen feet thick. Kumbhalgarh has seven fortified gateways. The fort precinct is studded with 360 temples, 300 ancient Jain and the rest Hindu.
This majestic fort is also the birthplace of Maharana Pratap; tales of the great king and his bravery are well known to all Indians.
From the palace top, it is possible to look tens of kilometers into the Aravalli Range. The sand dunes of the Thar Desert can be seen from the fort walls.
